Studies were conducted to test the effect of age and food sources on wear of the mandibular teeth of the phytophagous pentatomid, Euschistus heros (F.). The total length (µm) of the area bearing the mandibular teeth, the length of the 1st tooth, and the height of the 2nd tooth for teneral (< 1 day-old) adults were significantly greater than that of adults fed on natural [green bean, Phaseolus vulgaris pods, raw shelled peanuts, Arachis hypogaea, and mature soybean, Glycine max seeds] for 30 or 60 days. Adults fed on artificial dry diet showed, in general, similar results to those of teneral adults. Force (Newtons) required penetrating the natural foods was significantly greater than that required penetrating the artificial diet. The greater hardness of the natural foods caused increased mandibular serration wear.

Adults of the tomato stink bug, Arvelius albopunctatus (De Geer), from pasture lands at Londrina, Paraná state (latitude 23º 18' S; longitude 51º 09' W) and of Dichelops furcatus (F.) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) from field crops at Cruz Alta, Rio Grande do Sul state (latitude 28º 38' S; longitude) southern Brazil were parasitized by Hexacladia smithii Ashmead , which are set as new host records for this parasitoid.

Comparou-se em laboratório o comprimento do rostro, a morfologia da dentição mandibular e as áreas dos canais de alimento e de saliva de Dichelops melacanthus (Dallas) (Dm), Euschistus heros (F.) (Eh), Nezara viridula (L.) (Nv) e Piezodorus guildinii (Westwood) (Pg) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae). Nv apresentou comprimento do rostro mais longo (5,9 mm) e Pg o mais curto (3,5 mm); Dm e Eh apresentaram comprimentos intermediários. O comprimento e largura da região da ponta das mandíbulas que apresentam os dentes foram maiores em Nv (106,0 e 30,2 µm, respectivamente) e menores em Pg (71,1 e 23,7 µm), com todas as espécies possuindo quatro dentes centrais e três pares de dentes laterais. A superfície interna das mandíbulas apresentou superfície com textura escamosa. Secção transversal dos canais de alimento e de saliva (Fc e Sc) indicou áreas maiores em Nv e Dm e menores em Eh e Pg; entretanto, a razão Fc/Sc, apresentou valor relativo maior para Pg.

Laboratory studies were conducted to compare rostrum length morphology of mandible serration and area of food and salivary canals of Dichelops melacanthus (Dallas) (Dm), Euschistus heros (F.) (Eh), Nezara viridula (L.) (Nv), and Piezodorus guildinii (Westwood) (Pg) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae). Nv showed the longest (5.9 mm) and Pg the shortest (3.5 mm) rostrum length; Dm and Eh were intermediate. Length and width of mandible tip areas holding serration was bigger for Nv (106.0 and 30.2 µm, respectively) and smaller for Pg (71.1 and 23.7 µm), with all species having four central teeth and three pairs of lateral teeth. The inner mandible surface showed squamous texture. Cross-section of food and salivary canals (Fc and Sc) indicated greater area for Nv and Dm compared to Eh and Pg; however, the ratio Fc/Sc, yielded the highest relative area for Pg.

A biologia do pentatomídeo Dichelops melacanthus (Dallas) em plantas cultivadas e não-cultivadas foi estudada em laboratório. A mortalidade ninfal variou de ≈ 60% em milho (semente madura) a 77% em trigo (espiga imatura); nenhuma ninfa sobreviveu em plântulas de milho ou trigo. O desenvolvimento ninfal em soja, milho ou trigo (semente, vagem ou espiga) variou de 25,5 a 32,8 dias. O peso dos adultos na emergência foi menor em espiga de trigo. As ninfas alimentaram-se preferencialmente de soja (vagem imatura). Nas plantas não-cultivadas, as ninfas tiveram mortalidade de 73% em crotalária (vagem imatura); e 100% em trapoeraba (ramo). O desenvolvimento ninfal foi mais lento em crotalária ou trapoeraba do que em soja. A sobrevivência dos adultos decresceu com o tempo na maioria dos alimentos, com ≈50% dos adultos vivos no 30º dia. Em plântulas de milho e trigo ≈80% dos adultos estavam mortos no 20º dia. A longevidade total dos adultos variou de 31-43 dias, exceto em plântulas de milho e trigo (< 15 dias). A % de fêmeas que ovipositou foi maior (≈76%) em soja (vagem ou semente imatura) e menor (≈9%) em espiga imatura de trigo; as fêmeas não reproduziram em plântulas de milho ou trigo. O período de pré-oviposição foi menor (≈12 dias) em soja (vagem ou semente imatura) e maior (≈37 dias) em trigo (espiga imatura). A fecundidade foi semelhante e maior em todos os alimentos do que em trigo (espiga imatura). O ganho de peso ocorreu em todos os alimentos, menos plântulas de milho e trigo. Os adultos alimentaram-se preferencialmente em soja (vagem imatura e semente madura); plântula de trigo foi o alimento menos preferido.

The biology of the pentatomid Dichelops melacanthus (Dallas) feeding on cultivated and non-cultivated plants was studied in the laboratory. Nymph mortality varied from ≈ 60 on corn (seed mature) to 77% on wheat (ear immature); no nymphs survived on seedlings of corn or wheat. Nymph developmental time on soybean, corn or wheat (seed, pod or ear) varied from 25.5 to 32.8 days. Body weight at adult emergence was similar and greater on most foods than on wheat ear. Nymphs fed preferentially on soybean (pod immature). On non-cultivated hosts, nymphs showed high mortality (73%) on crotalaria (pod immature); on tropical spiderwort (stem) all nymphs died. Nymphs took longer time to develop on crotalaria and/or on spiderwort than on soybean. Body weight at adult emergence did not differ on crotalaria or soybean. Survivorship decreased with time on most foods, with ≈50% of adults alive at day 30. On corn and wheat seedlings ≈80% of adults were dead on day 20. Adult longevity ranged 31-43 days, except on corn and wheat seedlings < 15 days. Females % ovipositing peaked (≈76%) on soybean (pod or seed immature), and was minimum (≈9%) on wheat ear (immature); no females reproduced on seedlings of corn or wheat. Preoviposition period was shorter (≈12 days) on soybean (immature pod or seed) and longer (≈37 days) on wheat (ear immature). Fecundity was similar and higher on all foods than on wheat (ear immature). Body weigh gain occurred on all foods, but on corn and wheat seedlings. Adults fed preferably on soybean (pod immature and seed mature); wheat (seedling) was the least preferred food.

A deriva de insetos nas margens de lagos e mares é um fenômeno relativamente comum, embora aparentemente não seja relatado na literatura com freqüência. Procedeu-se a uma revisão sobre a deriva de insetos com ênfase sobre os casos relatados para percevejos (Heteroptera), e especulou-se sobre as possíveis causas para explicar esse fenômeno. O caso impressionante da deriva de populações do pentatomídeo Mayrinia curvidens (Mayr) nas praias do oceano Atlântico no Sul do Brasil é relatado pela primeira vez. Essa deriva, observada previamente em menor intensidade em meados da década de 1970 (A.R. Panizzi, não-publicado), foi constatada novamente em janeiro de 2006 ao longo da costa do Oceano Atlântico no Paraná (latitude 25º 45’ S), onde uma população estimada de 16 a 18 milhões de exemplares mortos foram encontrados formando uma faixa de pelo menos 15 km de extensão ao longo da praia. As circunstâncias que ocasionaram esse evento são analisadas em detalhe considerando-se dados meteorológicos e o possível aumento das populações do percevejo em plantas hospedeiras cultivadas e não-cultivadas ao longo da costa do Paraná e de Santa Catarina.

Insect drift on shore of lakes and seas is a relative common phenomenon although apparently not frequently reported in the literature. Here we review the worldwide occurrence of insect drift with emphasis on Heteroptera, and speculate on possible causes to explain such phenomenon. The dramatic drift of million of specimens of the pentatomid Mayrinia curvidens (Mayr) on the shore of the southern coast of the Atlantic ocean in Brazil is reported for the first time. This drift, previously observed to occur in the mid 70’s on the coast of Paraná state with minor intensity (A.R. Panizzi, unpublished) was again observed on January 2006 along the Atlantic coast of Paraná (latitude 25º 45’ S), where an estimated population of 16 to 18 million of dead specimens of the bug were observed forming a windrow for at least 15 km along the ocean shore. The circumstances of such event are analyzed in detail considering meteorological data and the possible build up of populations of the bug on cultivated and non-cultivated host plants along the coast of the states of Paraná and Santa Catarina.

Estudos foram conduzidos em laboratório para testar a adequabilidade de cordão de lã artificial, cordão de algodão, tecido voil e bola de algodão comercial como substrato artificial para oviposição do percevejo verde pequeno, Piezodorus guildinii (Westwood) (Heteroptera, Pentatomidae). Em gaiolas confinadas, 54% do total de massas de ovos foi depositado sobre o cordão de lã artificial, 31% sobre o cordão de algodão e apenas 15% sobre o tecido voil. Em teste adicional, o melhor substato selecionado, cordão de lã artificial, recebeu 92% das massas de ovos, comparado com 8% das massas depositadas sobre o substrato comumente utilizado, bola de algodão. O cordão de lã artificial recebeu o maior número de massas de ovos de qualquer tamanho, em particular aquelas com 11-20 ovos/postura. A disposição das massas de ovos de P. guildinii, com os ovos depositados em duas filas paralelas, se encaixou perfeitamente no cordão de lã sintética.

Studies in the laboratory tested the suitability of synthetic wool string, cotton string, cheesecloth, and commercial cotton ball as artificial oviposition substrates for the small green stink bug, Piezodorus guildinii (Westwood) (Heteroptera, Pentatomidae). In confined cages, 54% of total egg masses was laid on synthetic wool string, 31% on cotton string, and only 15% on cheesecloth. In an additional test, the best substrate selected, synthetic wool string, received 92% of egg masses compared to 8% on the commonly used substrate, cotton ball. Synthetic wool string received the most egg masses of any size, in particular those in the range 11-20 eggs/mass. Because the eggs of P. guildinii are laid in two parallel double rows, the egg masses fit the wool string perfectly.

A biologia de ninfas e de adultos do pentatomídeo neotropical Dichelops melacanthus (Dallas), alimentando-se de vagens imaturas de soja, Glycine max (L.) Merrill e sementes imaturas de milho, Zea mays L., e de dieta artificial seca, foi estudada em laboratório. O tempo de desenvolvimento ninfal foi menor nas dietas naturais (ca. 21-22 dias) do que na dieta artificial (28 dias), e a maioria das ninfas atingiram a fase adulta nas dietas naturais (55% em soja e 73% em milho) o que não ocorreu na dieta artificial (40%). O peso fresco dos adultos na emergência foi semelhante e maior para as fêmeas criadas como ninfas nas dietas naturais, comparado às fêmeas cujas ninfas foram criadas na dieta artificial; para os machos, os pesos foram semelhantes em todos os alimentos. A sobrevivência média de fêmeas e machos no 20º dia decresceu de 55% em soja para 40% em milho, e para 0% na dieta artificial. A longevidade total para fêmeas foi maior em soja, enquanto para machos foi semelhante em todos os alimentos. Cerca de três vêzes mais fêmeas ovipositaram em soja do que em milho, mas a fecundidade/fêmea foi semelhante em ambos os alimentos. Na dieta artificial, de 30 fêmeas, apenas uma ovipositou. O ganho de peso fresco de adultos aumentou significativamente na primeira semana de vida adulta; no final da 3ª semana, o ganho de peso foi semelhante em todos os alimentos.

The biology of nymphs and adults of the neotropical pentatomid, Dichelops melacanthus (Dallas), feeding on the natural foods, soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merrill immature pods, and corn, Zea mays L. immature seeds, and on an artificial dry diet, was studied in the laboratory. Nymph developmental time was shorter on the natural foods (ca. 21-22 days) than on the artificial diet (28 days), and most nymphs reached adulthood on the food plants (55% on soybean and 73% on corn) than on the artificial diet (40%). Fresh body weight at adult emergence was similar and higher for females raised as nymphs on the natural foods, compared to females from nymphs raised on the artificial diet; for males, weights were similar on all foods. Mean (female and male) survivorship up to day 20, decreased from 55% on soybean to 40% on corn, down to 0% on the artificial diet. Total longevity for females was higher on soybean, while for males was similar on all foods. About three times more females oviposited on soybean than on corn, but fecundity/female was similar on both foods. On the artificial diet, only one out of 30 females oviposited. Fresh body weight of adults increased significantly during the first week of adult life, and at the end of the 3rd week, weight gain was similar on all foods.

Estudos em laboratório com ninfas de primeiro ínstar do percevejo verde Nezara viridula (L.) indicaram que a umidade relativa (UR) afetou significativamente a eclosão e a sobrevivência das ninfas até o segundo ínstar, alcançando o valor máximo (<FONT FACE=Symbol>»</FONT> 90%) com a UR > 80%. Com 60% de UR, 60% das ninfas eclodiram e sobreviveram, enquanto com 0% de UR apenas 15% das ninfas eclodiram e a maioria morreu. As ninfas eclodidas de massas de ovos colocadas em caixas de plástico com gradiente de umidade permaneceram sobre os córions (cascas dos ovos) por cerca de um dia. Após esse período elas dispersaram e reagruparam sobre os córions 6.8 ± 0.67 vezes, até o abandono dos córions em direção à fonte de umidade, evitando as áreas saturadas com água. A duração de cada comportamento de rearranjo (dispersão + agrupamento) aumentou com o tempo, variando de <FONT FACE=Symbol>»</FONT> 26 min a 44 min. A duração média em que as ninfas ficaram agrupadas após cada rearranjo decresceu de cerca de 102 min, para o primeiro rearranjo, até 24 min, para o sexto e último rearranjo. Esse comportamento de rearranjo do primeiro ínstar sobre os córions aparentemente compensa a perda de água pelas ninfas.

Laboratory studies with 1st instar of southern green stink bug, Nezara viridula (L.) indicated that relative humidity (RH) greatly affected nymph emergence and survivorship up to the 2nd instar, reaching the maximum value (<FONT FACE=Symbol>»</FONT> 90%) with RH of > 80%. At 60% RH, 60% of the nymphs emerged and survived, while with 0% RH only <FONT FACE=Symbol>»</FONT> 15% of eggs hatched, and most nymphs died. Emerged nymphs from egg masses placed in plastic boxes with a gradient of humidity remained on egg shells for ca. one day. After this period, they dispersed and regrouped on top of shells 6.8 ± 0.67 times, until they abandoned the shells toward the source of humidity, avoiding the water-saturated areas. Duration taken for each rearrangement (dispersal + regroup) increased with time, with a range of <FONT FACE=Symbol>»</FONT> 26 min to 44 min. The mean duration of the grouping behavior on egg shells after each rearrangement decreased from <FONT FACE=Symbol>»</FONT> 102 min (1st) to 24 min (6th and last grouping). The rearrangement behavior of 1st instars on top of egg shells apparently compensates for the water loss of nymphs.

Dietas artificiais preparadas à base de germe de trigo, proteína de soja, dextrosol, fécula de batata, sacarose, celulose, óleo de soja ou girassol, e solução vitamínica para a criação de Nezara viridula (L.) e Euschistus heros (Fabricius) foram testadas em condições controladas de temperatura (25 ± 1°C), UR (60 ± 10%), e fotofase (14h). Três dietas foram testadas e comparadas com a natural [sementes de soja e amendoim e fruto de Ligustrum lucidum Ait. (Oleaceae)] As três dietas artificiais permitiram o desenvolvimento completo. A dieta contendo óleo de girassol foi a mais adequada para N. viridula enquanto que, para E. heros, o melhor desenvolvimento foi na dieta contendo óleo de soja. Os resultados obtidos indicam que as dietas artificiais foram inferiores à natural. As dietas artificiais foram mais adequadas para E. heros.

Artificial diets prepared with wheat germ, soybean protein, dextrosol, potato starch, sucrose, cellulose, soybean or sunflower oil, and vitamin solution for rearing Nezara viridula (L.) and Euschistus heros (Fabricius) were tested under controlled temperature (25 ± 1°C), RH (60 ± 10%), and photophase (14h). Three diets were tested and compared with the natural diet privet [soybean and peanut seeds and privet Ligustrum lucidum Ait. fruit (Oleaceae)]. All three artificial diets allowed full development. The diet containing sunflower oil was the most suitable for N. viridula while E. heros developed better on a diet composed of soybean oil. Data indicated that the artificial diets were inferior to the natural diet. The artificial diets were more adequate for E. heros.

O antibiótico estreptomicina adicionado à água de beber na concentração de 125 mg/l acelerou o desenvolvimento ninfal de Nezara viridula (L.) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), aumentou a sobrevivência e duplicou a longevidade dos adultos, sem afetar a sobrevivência ninfal e o peso dos adultos, quando comparado aos insetos testemunhas. A estreptomicina apresenta potencial para ser utilizada em sistemas de criação do inseto, em especial no tratamento de insetos coletados no campo, reduzindo a introdução de bactérias potencialmente patogênicas na colônia e melhorando a qualidade geral da criação.

The antibiotic streptomycin added to the drinking water at a concentration of 125 mg/l during nymphal development of Nezara viridula (L.) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae)accelerated the development in ca. 2 days, increased survivorship, and doubled adult longevity; nymph survivorship and adult body weight were not affected when compared to control insects. Streptomycin has potential in rearing N. viridula, especially in improving quality of field-collected adults, by mitigating the introduction of pathogenic bacteria, and improving the quality of the population.

Nezara viridula (L.) é um pentatomídeo cosmopolita e polimórfico. Vários tipos geneticamente determinados têm sido descritos devido à variação de coloração de adultos. Com o objetivo de mapear a distribuição geográfica dos tipos no Brasil, foram feitos levantamentos em 2001 e 2002 em 13 estados. Os percevejos do tipo G (smaragdula - totalmente verde) foram mais comuns e apresentaram distribuição ampla, ocorrendo de norte a sul do país (latitude 2º 49'N a 31º 46' S), exceto na Região Centro-Oeste. Os percevejos do tipo O (torquata - corpo verde com os lobos laterais e medianos da cabeça e margem anterior do pronoto de cor amarela), menos abundantes que o anterior, restringiram-se a locais com latitudes maiores que 23º18' S e temperaturas médias anuais < 20,8ºC (Região Sul). Percevejos do tipo Y (aurantiaca - totalmente amarelo ou alaranjado), de ocorrência esporádica, foram coletados somente na Região Sul. O tipo N. viridula (smaragdula) foi coletado em apenas um local na Região Norte (Boa Vista, RR, latitude 2º 49' N). Não se observou correlação da abundância dos tipos mais comuns smaragdula e torquata com a altitude.

Nezara viridula (L.) is a cosmopolitan and polymorphic pentatomid. Several genetically determined types have been described due to body color variation in adults. A survey covering 13 Brazilian states was conducted during 2001 and 2002 to determine the geographical distribution of the main types. Type G (smaragdula - body entirely green), the most common, showed a wide distribution, from south to north (latitude 2º 49' N to 31º 46' S), except in the Central-West Region. Type O (torquata body green with lateral and median lobes of the head and anterior margin of the pronotum yellow), less abundant than the former, was more frequent at latitudes > 23º18' S and mean annual temperatures < 20.8ºC (Southern Region). Type Y (aurantiaca - body entirely gold or orange), which is rare, was collected only in the Southern Region. N. viridula (smaragdula) was captured in only one place in the Northern Region (Boa Vista, RR, latitude 2º 49' N). The abundance of the two most common types, smaragdula and torquata, was not correlated with altitude.

De março de 2002 a janeiro de 2004 foi mantida uma colônia do percevejo verde, Nezara viridula (L.), em laboratório. Durante esse período observou-se o comportamento de oviposição. Após o ovo ser expelido, a fêmea encosta a massa de ovos com a face dorsal do último tarsômero. Esse movimento feito com uma das pernas do último par foi observado uma única vez, logo após a deposição do ovo. Trata-se de um detalhe do comportamento no processo de oviposição pouco conhecido dessa espécie de pentatomídeo ainda não totalmente elucidado; especula-se que auxilie no posicionamento e aglutinação dos ovos uns aos outros.

From March 2002 to January 2004, a colony of southern green stink bug, Nezara viridula (L.), was kept in the laboratory, and its oviposition behavior was observed. During oviposition, soon after the egg is expelled, the female touches the egg mass with the dorsal surface of the last tarsomere; this movement of one leg of the hind pair occurred once. This small component of the oviposition behavior of this pentatomid is little known and not yet fully understood; it may help to position and glue the newly deposited egg to the others.

O percevejo verde, Nezara viridula (L.), possui vários tipos determinados geneticamente sendo três mais comuns no Brasil: G (f. smaragdula corpo verde), O (f. torquata corpo verde com os lobos laterais e medianos da cabeça e margem anterior do pronoto de cor amarela), e Y (f. aurantiaca corpo amarelo ou alaranjado). Estudou-se a performance das ninfas e dos adultos desses tipos a 15ºC/10hL, 22ºC/12hL e 29ºC/14hL. A mortalidade das ninfas dos três tipos a 15ºC/10hL foi alta (ca. 80%), em especial para o tipo G (98%); a 22ºC/12hL, a maior mortalidade (55%) ocorreu para o tipo G, e a 29ºC/14hL para o tipo Y (65%). Em geral, à medida que aumentou a temperatura e o fotoperíodo as ninfas completaram o ciclo mais rápido. A longevidade dos adultos do tipo G decresceu de ca. 88 dias a 15ºC/10hL a ca. 57 dias a 22ºC/12hL e a 29ºC/14hL; para o tipo O a longevidade variou de ca. 81 dias a 22ºC/12hL a ca. 55 dias a 29ºC/14hL; e para o tipo Y a longevidade foi a menor, apresentando redução drástica (< 20 dias) nos extremos das temperaturas/fotoperíodos. Os tipos G e Y não se reproduziram a 15ºC/10hL, e o Y não se reproduziu a 29ºC/14hL; o tipo O reproduziu-se nas três temperaturas/fotoperíodos. Esses resultados demonstram que o tipo O é mais adaptado às temperaturas/fotoperíodos menores o que explica a sua maior ocorrência no extremo sul do Brasil.

The southern green stink bug, Nezara viridula (L.), has several genetically determined types, three being the most common in Brazil: G (f. smaragdula - green body), O (f. torquata - green body with lateral and median lobes of the head and anterior margin of the pronotum yellow), and Y (f. aurantiaca - gold or orange body). Nymphal and adult performance of these types was studied at 15ºC/10hL, 22ºC/12hL, and 29ºC/14hL. Mean total nymph mortality in all types at 15ºC/10hL was high (ca. 80%), especially for type G (98%); at 22ºC/12hL, the greatest mortality (55%) occurred in type G, and at 29ºC/14hL in type Y (65%). In general, at combinations of higher temperatures and longer photoperiods, nymphs developed faster. Adult longevity of type G decreased from ca. 88 days at 15ºC/10hL to ca. 57 days at 22ºC/12hL and 29ºC/14hL; for type O, adult longevity varied from ca. 81 days at 22ºC/12hL to ca. 55 days at 29ºC/14hL; type Y showed the shortest lifespan, in particular at the extremes of temperatures/photoperiods (< 20 days). Types G and Y did not reproduce at 15ºC/10hL, and type Y did not reproduce at 29ºC/14hL; type O reproduced at all three abiotic conditions. These results demonstrate that type O is the most adapted to the cooler temperature and shorter photoperiod, which explains its greater abundance in south Brazil.

Durante o mês de março de 2000, foram coletados adultos dos percevejos cirtocorídeos Cyrtocoris egeris Packauskas & Schaefer e C. trigonus (Germar) em duas espécies de plantas e em dois locais distintos. No Brasil (Londrina, PR) adultos de C. trigonus foram observados alimentando-se em hastes de guanxuma, Sida rhombifolia L. (Malvaceae). Apesar de as fêmeas terem ovipositado em laboratório, as ninfas não sobreviveram nesse alimento. Na Argentina (Reconquista, Província de Santa Fé), adultos e ninfas de C. egeris foram observados alimentando-se em vagens imaturas de soja, Glycine max (L.) Merrill. Nas condições de laboratório utilizadas, as ninfas não conseguiram se desenvolver além do terceiro instar.

During March 2000, nymphs and adults of the cyrtocorid bugs Cyrtocoris egeris Packauskas & Schaefer and C. trigonus (Germar) were observed on two different plants at two different localities. In Brazil (Londrina, Paraná State) adult C. trigonus were found feeding on stems of the weed plant arrow leaf sida, Sida rhombifolia L. (Malvaceae). Despite egg deposition in the laboratory, nymphs did not develop on this plant. In Argentina (Reconquista, Santa Fé Province), nymphs and adults of C. egeris were observed feeding on immature soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] pods. Under laboratory conditions, nymphs of neither species could be reared beyond the third instar.

O percevejo coreídeo Leptoglossus zonatus (Dallas, 1852) é freqüente na cultura do milho (Zea mays L.) no Brasil e tem sido observado voando e pousando sobre objetos ou pessoas que se aproximam do seu habitat. Durante o mês de janeiro de 1995, estudou-se esse comportamento em lavoura de milho. Os resultados indicaram que os percevejos concentraram-se, de forma crescente, sobre objetos (armadilhas de plástico cilíndricas) introduzidos em seu habitat nas primeiras 24 horas. Gradualmente, entretanto, com o passar do tempo (8 dias), esse provável comportamento territorial ou de reconhecimento diminuiu e tendeu a desaparecer.

The coreid Leptoglossus zonatus (Dallas, 1852) is commonly found in corn (Zea mays L.) fields in Brazil, and it has been observed flying and landing on objects or persons near these fields. During January, 1995, this behavior was studied in corn plantations. Results indicated that the bugs concentrated on objects (plastic cylinders traps) introduced into their habitat and that their number increased during the first 24 hs. However, as time passed (8 days), this possible territorial or recognition behavior gradually decreased, and tended to disappear.
